![]() ![]() ![]() Why so much scandal, some of it quite shocking, about Bernini, his family, his patrons, and in general, the Rome of his lifetime? Why so much interest in the darker side of their lives? Why so much coverage of their misbehavior, sexual or otherwise? The more cynical among my critics might believe it is simply to sell more books by appealing to the prurient interests of readers. One of the more frequent comments made – approvingly or disapprovingly – about my recent biography of that international superstar of Baroque Europe, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, concerns its scandalous content. ![]() ![]() This collection provides not only a substantial number of role models for girls interested in a career in mathematics, but also a unique depiction of a field that can offer a lifetime of challenge and enjoyment. Most mathematicians profiled stress the value, importance, and enjoyment of collaborative research, contradicting the prevailing notion that doing good mathematics requires isolation. Many profiles draw on interviews with the subject, and each includes a short list of suggested reading by and about the mathematician. Written by practicing mathematicians, teachers and researchers, these profiles give voice to the variety of pathways into mathematics that women have followed and the diversity of areas in which mathematics can work. Publication date 1998 Topics Women mathematicians. The work also celebrates the contributions of minority women, including 10 African-American, Latina, and Asian mathematicians. A story for anyone who has ever felt unappreciated, overlooked or overworked but dreams of magic, from Australia's most acclaimed picture book creator, and first BAME winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal. But one day, something truly extraordinary happens. Tok Tok Tok! Cicada works in an office, dutifully working day after day for unappreciative bosses and being bullied by his co-workers. Cicada works day and night, in very poor conditions, barely surviving, and with the knowledge that others are aware of its neglect but decide to ignore it. I selected this book because it addresses concepts such as inequality and also feeling invisible before a powerful other. It's a book about people - often women and mothers, but not always - becoming unmoored and losing their way. Two abandoned children fight against starvation. A stressed mother of two boys is injured in a literal cabin in the woods. A snake devotee meets his end in the wilderness, at the hands of his life's passion. The natural wonders and dangers of Florida play into almost all these stories. Small, hard-hitting snippets of lives that still make you feel emotionally-drained, but also thoughtful and satisfied. Reading her full-length novel was a chore, but for me at least, Groff seems born to write short stories. Groff's writing style is dense and wordy, metaphorical and poetic and - sometimes - exhausting. I have to say I enjoyed Florida so much more than Fates and Furies. Snakes, gators, swamps and storms form the backdrop of these exquisitely human stories. ![]() The truth might be moral, but it isn't always right. ![]() ![]() ![]() The predictability of the titles extends into the structure and, in the case of Ralph Peters' "Red Army," throughout the book.
